After what seemed like forever, the roars from the crowds of spectators heralded the return of cross country on the primary schools’ calendar. The sun shone down on the grass at Mark Hall Sports Centre and the atmosphere was electric. So long have we all waited for a feeling like this afternoon and, thanks to the support of school staff, volunteer marshals, parents, pupils and staff at MHA and the Sports Centre staff, the event ran amazingly well.
Despite some recent negative reports in the local press, it is clear that there is a huge pool of talent for athletics in Harlow. Even though many schools had to withdraw late during the week (as rising Covid numbers have affected school staffing levels), there were still over 600 runners competing. The runners were awesome, and many completed personal best times around the morning course for children in Years 3 and 4 (1000m approximately) and the afternoon course for pupils in Years 5 and 6 (1500m approximately).
Willed on by their excited peers, the races ran smoothly and there were little or no issues from schools and spectators; everyone clearly understood the importance of safeguarding and remained within their designated zones.
A full list of results has been sent to the schools and invitations for the top team and the 3 best individuals has been sent for the Essex County Finals taking place in Southend in late April.
