Church Langley crowned Football Cup Winners

On a blustery afternoon the four teams involved in this year’s football cup semi-finals and finals produced some magical entertainment - something that was so sadly lacking for the national team this week in the European Championships. In fact the players from Milwards, William Martin, Henry Moore and Church Langley showed more passion and commitment than many professional players. As expected at this stage of the competition the standard was very high and both The Henry Moore and Church Langley were made to work hard for their semi-final victories (Henry Moore eventually overpowering William Martin 5-1, whilst Church Langley edged out Milwards 4-2).

The all-weather surface of the Harlow Town FC enabled all the teams to pass the ball fluently, creating chances which were either well defended or expertly tuck away. In the 3rd/4thplayoff  Milwards took the lead, only for a last minute William Martin equaliser to leave both teams level for 3rdplace. In the final Church Langley looked to have the better of the opening exchanges but each time they scored, they were pegged back by a determined Henry Moore team. Having edged themselves in front, Church Langley secured victory as the Henry Moore team pressed for an equaliser - the final finished 4-2.

Terry Coxhead, the former Chairman of the HDPSSA for so many wonderful years, was watching on from the stands as his grandson James presented the trophy on his behalf to Church Langley. The spectators cheered fairly throughout and there were some lovely instances of sportsmanship and fair play, despite the obvious disappointments and frustrations. Thanks were given to Harlow Town FC for allowing us to us such an amazing facility, to the teams and coaching staff and then finally to the referees. Mr Worton-Geer, football secretary for the HDPSSA, was delighted to be on hand to officiate the final and is already looking forward to organising next year’s event.
