Church Langley win the Shakoor Cricket trophy

Congratulations went once again to the cricketers of Church Langley A team, who squeaked past Fawbert and Barnard A in a thrilling last-ball match to retain the ‘Best-Team Kwik Cricket Trophy’.

Played once again at the majestic looking Harlow Town Cricket Club, 12 teams from around Harlow came together to compete for the Shohaib Shakoor Trophy, dedicated to the memory of the little boy from Abbotsweld Primary who so tragically lost his life in a house fire, which also claimed the lives of several family members. In a fantastic show of solidarity, the children, parents and staff held a minute of applause in his memory before commencing the day’s play – well done to all.

The morning sessions saw teams from: Church Langley, St Lukes, Tanys Dell, St Albans, William Martin, Milwards and Fawbert and Barnard compete in a series of poll matches; having been regrouped in 3 leagues, the teams spent the remainder of a jam-packed afternoon really honing their skills in the field. There were some huge hits and outstanding catches, some worthy of gracing Lords itself.

With both teams being unbeaten, the final came down to a thrilling match between Fawbert and Barnard A and Church Langley A. Some tight bowling kept Fawbert and Barnard’s score relatively low until the final two overs were they plundered 39 runs to set up an exciting run chase. Church Langley smashed their way towards the target with some powerful blows and only needed to see out the final two overs without losing any wickets. The final ball couldn’t have been any closer to the stumps but Church Langley managed to hold out to secure the trophy and go forward to representing Harlow in the Level 3 at Billericay.

Thanks to all the Passmores student umpires, who performed so brilliantly throughout the day and of course to Harlow Town Cricket Club for providing such an inspiring back drop.
