Olympic Programme week 1

HARLOW SCHOOL SPORTS PARTNERSHIP – Olympic Celebration Programme

Primary School pupils across Harlow have spent the week celebrating the forthcoming Olympics by taking part in special sporting events which form part of HSSP’s 2 week long Olympic programme..

The programme kicked off on 25th June (world sports day) with a Judo event held at Stewards School which was organised and run by Mick Ellis from Harlow Judo Club.  Over 100 children from primary and secondary schools turned up to hit the mats and throw each other around.

Monday also saw the launch of the Harlow Schools torch relay which will be taken from event to event by different schools over the course of the programme.  The Primary School Torch is based on a design by Hannah Marsden from Roydon School (year 6).  Hannah was on hand to pass the torch to Kingsmoor for the 1st stage of the relay.  There is also a second torch designed by Curtis Sayers (year 10) from Burnt Mill Secondary school.  Both designs won a HSSP design a torch competition which was held earlier this academic year and judged in January 2012.

The programme moved onto a football day held at Mark Hall Sports Centre where 150 year 3&4 pupils spent the morning receiving coaching and in the afternoon participate in a friendly competition against other schools.  Harlow College students carried out the coaching in the morning and then in the afternoon their role changed from coaches to team managers.  Everyone had a great day and even the weather brighten up for the afternoon!

At the football the torches were passed from Kingsmoor to St Lukes and Church Langley Primary schools and their journey around town continued.

Onto Friday and swimming was up next for year 3,4,5 and 6 children with swimming gala’s at both Burnt Mill and Stewards swimming pools.  In total there were over 250 children swimming on Friday afternoon and although they were taking part in a gala the emphasis was very much on taking part as with all the events in the programme.

At the swimming the torches were passed from Church Langley to Broadfields and St Lukes passed their torch onto Latton Green to continue the relay and add more stories to their journey.

In total over 500 children have taken part in the programme this week and every child has received a special commemorative medal for taking part and helping to celebrate the Olympics.

George Gardiner, Partnership Manger; Harlow SSP said “everyone involved in the programme to date has brought into it 100% and all the children taking part have had a massive amount of fun taking part in Olympic sports which is what its all about at the end of the day!

This programme is being delivered in partnership with a large number of people and I would like to thank everyone who has played a part in making the first week such a success!”
