Years 3/4's enjoy Tag Rugby Festival

What an exhausting day!

Thank you to the 17 teams who braved the Autumnal weather to take part in this year’s Year 3/4 Tag-Rugby Festival at Mark Hall Academy. The morning saw 15 teams take part in 3 different rugby-themed activities: Rugby Rounders, Hedgehogs Crossing and Rugby Bulldog. The children really enjoyed these warm-up games and clearly showed development of dodging, running with the ball and passing. Thanks to all the staff members for participating and ensuring this part of the day ran smoothly.

Having stopped briefly for a quick break, the idea was to demonstrate some of the basic rules of Tag-Rugby in an attempt to make the games less problematic. Unfortunately the plan didn’t quite pan out as the demonstrators weren’t as willing to run forward and pass backwards as perhaps they could have been. Never ones to be deterred, members of staff soon demonstrated the type of flowing-running-rugby often associated with the new Zealand All Blacks - Mr Esteves of the Downs, twice bursting through the defence before Santa Claus himself (Mr Harries of Church Langley) touched down.

The afternoon games were always going to be a big ask. 15 matches on each of the 3 pitches meant that time was tight and changeovers needed to be slick; unfortunately as can happen with the best laid plans, things didn’t quite go as smoothly but in the main the children enjoyed themselves; the progress across many of the teams/individuals was clearly visible and this will stand them in good stead for future tournaments. As we didn’t manage to complete all the games in the time available, the group results are inconclusive.

Thank you to all the children, spectators and staff for their efforts today; special mention to Gill Blackmore of Milwards, who’s assistance today was invaluable and very much appreciated.
